Gamma Knife treatment step 1

I'm not the sort of person who normally makes a fuss about things, I’m pretty positive in my attitude to life and I don’t tend to worry, but I did have to put a bit of a brave face on things because I was fairly apprehensive. I did a bit of reading before I went to the Centre, but I must admit I didn’t understand all the technical stuff – not that it mattered because they explained everything so well as I went along and I felt very safe and reassured all the time. My husband ‘John’ came with me and we started by having a chat to my doctor..

Next the doctors and a nurse fitted a frame on my head. The frame keeps your head in exactly the same position for the scan as it will later be for the treatment to be perfectly matched up. I was given a local anaesthetic for this procedure, which only lasted about ten minutes. I was surprised it was such a big team all looking after me – there was a lot involved but it was very reassuring having caring people around me all the time explaining everything as we went along.
